Registered Psychologist vs. Registered Social Worker vs. Canadian Certified Counsellor: Which Credential Matters in Calgary?
Calgary has therapists with dozens of different credential types. Most people do not know what any of them actually mean, which ones are regulated, or which ones their insurance covers. This guide cuts through the confusion.
One of the most common questions at Curio Counselling Calgary is: does it matter what credentials my therapist has? The answer is yes — but not in the way most people expect. The credential matters primarily for two reasons: regulation (which protects you) and insurance coverage (which affects your costs). Here is a direct breakdown of what each designation means in Alberta.
Registered Psychologist (RPsych)
Regulated in Alberta
The title Registered Psychologist is legally protected in Alberta under the Health Professions Act and regulated by the College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP). Only individuals who have met CAP's stringent training, examination, and supervised practice requirements can use this title. Attempting to practice as a psychologist without registration is a regulated offense.
Training Requirements
Registration as a psychologist in Alberta typically requires a doctoral degree (PhD or PsyD) in psychology from an accredited program, though a master's level route exists with additional supervision requirements. CAP-supervised practice hours must be completed before full registration is granted. Provisional Psychologists (those completing their supervised hours toward full registration) are also regulated by CAP and can legally provide therapy under supervision.
What Psychologists Can Do That Others Cannot
Only Registered Psychologists can administer and interpret formal psychological assessments in Alberta — including ADHD assessments, psychoeducational testing, and diagnostic psychological evaluations. If you need a formal assessment or diagnosis, an RPsych is the specific credential required.
Insurance Coverage
Most extended health benefit plans in Alberta specify coverage for Registered Psychologist services. If your plan specifies this credential, other designations will not be covered regardless of the therapist's actual training and competence.
Registered Social Worker (RSW) with Clinical Training
Regulated in Alberta
Social work is regulated in Alberta by the Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW). The RSW designation requires completion of an accredited social work degree (bachelor's or master's level) and registration with ACSW. However, not all RSWs practice psychotherapy — some work in policy, community development, or case management. When evaluating an RSW therapist, look specifically for clinical training in evidence-based therapy modalities beyond the base designation.
Training Variability
The quality and depth of clinical training varies significantly among RSWs providing therapy. An RSW with a Master of Social Work (MSW) from a clinical program and additional certification in EMDR, EFT, or CBT is providing a meaningfully different level of service than an RSW with a bachelor's degree and limited post-degree clinical training. The base designation does not tell you this — the individual profile does.
Insurance Coverage
Many Alberta extended health benefit plans now cover RSW services for psychotherapy, though coverage limits and plan-specific requirements vary. Check whether your plan specifies Registered Psychologist only or includes Registered Social Worker in its covered providers. This distinction can affect hundreds of dollars in out-of-pocket costs annually.
Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC)
Not Regulated in Alberta
The CCC is a professional certification granted by the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), not a regulated designation in Alberta. This means that the title is not legally protected in this province — anyone could theoretically present themselves as a counsellor in Alberta without the CCC credential. The CCC does indicate that the individual has met CCPA's requirements for graduate-level training and supervised experience, and it is a credible professional marker, but it carries less legal weight than RPsych or RSW in Alberta specifically.
Insurance Coverage
Coverage for CCC practitioners is less consistent across Alberta benefit plans. Some plans cover it; many do not. Verify with your insurer before selecting a CCC therapist on the assumption of coverage.
