What are Hate Crimes and Incidents

Hate crimes' are any crimes where the perpetrator's hostility or prejudice against an identifiable group of people is a factor in determining who is victimised.

• 'Hate incidents' are unpleasant events motivated by hostility or prejudice that cannot be classified as a crime.
• The Council, Police and others will take reports of both incidents and crimes and we'll do our very best to help you.

Types of Hate Crime

Hate crime is generally regarded as any incident where the individual has been targeted due to their:

• race (racism)
• faith or religion (e.g. Islamophobia or anti-Semitism)
• sexual orientation (homophobia)
• disability - including physical and learning disabilities and mental health
  
• gender identity or transgender characteristics
  
• age (ageism)
• the perception that someone fits into one of these categories, even if they do not.

Incidents of Hate Crime can include:

• threats
• physical or verbal assaults
• harassment, bullying or online/text bullying
• robbery
• damage to property or arson
• offensive letters of graffiti
  
• something else.
• These incidents can be committed randomly, or can be part of a campaign of continued harassment or victimisation by a stranger, customers, neighbours, extremists groups or even a family member
