Are you interested in having a say in how healthcare services are provided in north east London and south west Essex?

If so, you may want to consider standing to be a governor at North East London NHS Foundation Trust (NELFT), which provides mental health and community health services to a population of almost 1.5million.

Elections are to be held for the following positions:
  • 16 members from the following public constituencies:
  • Barking and Dagenham – 3 members
  • Havering – 3 members
  • Redbridge – 3 members
  • Waltham Forest – 3 members
  • Basildon – 1 member
  • Brentwood – 1 member
  • Thurrock – 1 member

The Council of Governors aims to give everyday people who use the healthcare services a bigger say in how they are run. It is the voice of local people and is responsible for helping to set the direction and shape the future of NELFT based on members’ views
.
To qualify for nomination you must be a public member of NELFT, aged 16 and over, and live within the constituency for which you wish to stand as a candidate. You can become a member by completing a form online at www.nelft.nhs.uk or by calling .

There are no specific qualifications needed for becoming an NELFT governor and training is given. The only requirements are:
• a keen interest in health care
• time to attend meetings and get involved in events and training
• a willingness to work with others, listen and share ideas
• a desire to learn more about community and mental health services.

The NELFT Council of Governors holds the trust’s non-executive directors to account for the performance of the Board and seeks to ensure the continued success of the organisation through effective management, partnership working and maintaining NHS values and principles.
The NELFT Council of Governors meets formally three times a year. Governors are involved in committees and working groups and also participate in governor forums where their particular expertise or perspective is valuable.

Peter Wignall, acting chair of NELFT, said: "Our governors play an integral role in the running of our organisation and we need people with a keen interest in local health services to join us in becoming governors of our foundation trust. We are hoping people from our membership list will put themselves forward, but anyone who is not already a member can still sign-up and fill in a nomination form for the governor elections too. The Council of Governors at NELFT has a very important role to play as they are there to ensure the trust listens to local people and meets their health needs.

Governors will be able to bring the views of the local communities we serve and users of our services to the very heart of the organisation. We are looking for people who are passionate about health to become governors and make a positive contribution to the future of the healthcare we provide.”

If you wish to stand for election you can request a nomination form and information about how to stand for election by calling the NELFT membership office on or by emailing
