Religion and Mental Health

We still have a few places left for our talk on Tuesday evening (14th October) on the subject of Religion and Mental Health.

Dr Dein, Senior Lecturer in Psychiatry at the University College London will be addressing a number of questions such as: Does religion promote good mental health? Are religious people happier than others? Does religious activity improve physical health?

The talk will be taking place in the Gloucester Room, Central Library, Clements Road, Ilford IG1 1EA from 7pm to 8.30pm.

Sathnam Sanghera

Towards a Psychologically Minded Society - Saturday 25th October, 2.30pm to 4.30pm

Anxiety Care is pleased to be hosting a talk by Martin Seager, Head of Redbridge Psychological Services (NE London Foundation Trust) and Consultant Clinical psychologist on Saturday 25th October from 2.30pm to 4.30pm the cost is £30.

The title of this talk is 'Why Psychological Treatment Is Not Enough - Towards a Psychologically Minded Society'. This Includes a 45 minute talk, workshops and a plenary session.

Redbridge Service Relationship Officer - Sanibel Counselling Centre

Karen Bowden has joined the Sanibel Counselling Centre as Redbridge Service Relationship Officer. The Sanibel is funded by Redbridge PCT to assess all patients with mild to moderate mental health difficulties. If brief counselling is indicated the Sanibel offers up to six sessions. However, if longer-term or specialised help is needed the Sanibel counsellors will refer on.

Karen's role involves making links with local agencies to provide counsellors with up to date signposting or referral information.

Recovery/Assertiveness Training for All

Run Up and Anxiety Care are running a series of workshops around recovery and assertiveness with the aim of enabling people to move forwards with their lives.

Domestic Violence and Mental Health Conference

The Woman's Trust is holding a conference on Domestic Violence and Mental Health on October 23rd from 10-5pm, at Blackfriars in Central London. The cost is £100 to voluntary sector and £150 to statutory sector.

The keynote speaker is Gillian Proctor, Clinical Psychologist, Bradford & Airedale Teaching PCT Mental Health Team and she will be talking on: "Inequalities of power: the relevance to domestic violence, distress and therapy"..

Samhain (Hallowe'en) Fire Festival Friday 31st October 5-9pm

After our regular Friday workday, the flames will be flickering at Forest Farm as we observe the end of the harvest season. As well as our traditional bonfire, we'll be twirling the fire poi and enjoying an autumnal soup from the cauldron. Bring warm clothes and sturdy footwear.

Forest Farm Peace Garden is a community garden which works for people and for the environment. We are located in Hainault, which is in East London on the Central Line.

The Police and Mental Health

This briefing from the Sainsbury's Centre for Mental Health looks at the role of the police with mental health, as the police service is commonly the first point of contact for a person in a mental health crisis.

The Royal College of Psychiatrists is teaming up with police forces in three areas of England - Nottinghamshire, Oxfordshire and the London Borough of Redbridge - to monitor the quality of care given to people detained under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act.

Section 136 allows the police to take someone who they believe is suffering from a mental disorder and in need of immediate care or control from a public place to a place of safety.
