World Mental Health Day, October 6, Town Hall Ilford

Aimed at challenging the stigma and discrimination surrounding mental health conditions and also the many ways we can help ourselves to improve our mental and emotional well-being, we are celebrating World Mental Health Day on Thursday 6 October at Ilford Town Hall from 11am to 3pm.

So, come along and find out more. There will be plenty of information stalls, massages, free health checks, music, raffles and more.

Mental health problems trigger strongest prejudice, WHO report finds

The World Health Organization (WHO) World Report on Disability, the first major publication of its kind, gave an important account of the plight of people with mental health problems all over the world. The WHO found (ex-) users of mental health services to have a lower life expectancy and more chronic health conditions than the general population.

People with long term mental health problems were more likely to be obese and have heart disease, high blood pressure, respiratory disease, diabetes, strokes, or breast cancer. They were also more prone to developing chronic health conditions at a younger age, and to dying sooner after diagnosis.

Disability Capital Conference

The Mayor of London's Disability Capital Conference 2011 is on Thursday 20 October in the Platinum Suite at London's Excel Centre. This year it will run alongside Naidex South, the disability, homecare and rehabilitation exhibition.

Come to the Mayor's Deaf and disability equality conference. We'll be talking about the London 2012 legacy, accessible transport, housing, debt management, volunteering and more.

There will be five main plenary sessions, plus six workshops to choose from.

High profile speakers include Mayor of London, Boris Johnson and Maria Miller, Minister for Disabled People. Topics will range from Olympic legacy, transport, hate crime, volunteering, London debt strategy, changing faces, invisible disability and disability equality in practice.

Come along on the day and meet London 2012 Paralympic Athletes, hear about their experiences and find out how you can get involved in developing GLA strategies to meet your needs.

Join us at Forest Farm Peace Garden to celebrate the abundance of the harvest at our next open day. There will be guided walks of the garden, children's activities, hot food, sale of plants, bread and cakes, a swap-stall and making freshly pressed apple juice from Forest Farm Peace Garden apples.
