Failings in mental health crisis care exposed

Two fifths of NHS mental health trusts do not have enough staff to offer adequate care to people suffering a mental health crisis, it has emerged

Research carried out by mental health charity Mind has revealed crisis care in the NHS is struggling to meet demand with patients waiting too long to be seen, not getting the help they need and often not treated with respect of dignity.

Mental Health is a priority and should be put on a par with physical health in the NHS

The NHS has been given a clear mandate to tackle the longstanding and long outdated disparity between mental and physical health care and to treat people with mental health conditions on a par to those with physical conditions.

Advocacy in Redbridge

From 2 January, Redbridge advocacy services will be delivered by VoiceAbility together with Daffodil Advocacy and the Centre for Independent and Inclusive Living(CiiL Redbridge).

The service will be known as 'Advocacy in Redbridge'. The service will deliver Independent Mental Capacity Advocacy(IMCA), Independent Mental Health Advocacy (IMHA), and Generic Non Statutory Advocacy which will include Professional Advocacy and Volunteer Advocacy Together.

We will deliver a free, independent, professional and confidential service enabling Redbridge residents to access a person-centred provision that enables them to achieve their outcomes.

We also plan to work with the local community to develop group advocacy events to enable groups to come together, identify common concerns, invite guests from local services, and speak with a single, representative voice in order to influence local services. We will also be providing support to service users at the Redbridge Learning Disability Partnership Board.

Annual Budget Consultation with the Voluntary and Community Sector, Monday 14 January 2013

The Cabinet Member for Adult Social Services and Health, Councillor John Fairley-Churchill would like to invite you to the next Adult Social Services Annual Budget Consultation with the Voluntary and Community Sector. The topic for discussion will form part of the Council's budget consultation process.

The meeting will be chaired by Councillor Fairley-Churchill and will be attended by a range of voluntary and community sector agencies.

Cabinet papers will be available from 28 December 2012 setting out the budget proposals.

Improved access to psychological therapies in Redbridge for those affected by personality disorder

The Personality Disorder Services in Redbridge, run by North East London NHS Foundation Trust (NELFT), have become a national demonstrator site for outstanding work that has shown positive results for patients.

The Department of Health recently announced that NELFT is one of just three NHS healthcare organisations in England to be a national Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) Severe Mental Illness (SMI) demonstrator site for people affected by personality disorder.

The Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) programme is a national NHS initiative that aims to increase significantly the availability of psychological therapies for psychosis, bipolar disorder and personality disorder.

Know Your Rights Campaign

Older people and their carers urged to find out if they are missing out. This is the fifth Mayor's Know Your Rights campaign, which aims to ensure London's older people and their carers get financial help and advice when they need it, and receive the benefits they are entitled to. The GLA estimates around 200,000 pensioners in London are not claiming at least one income-related benefit they are eligible for.

The Mayor is running this campaign in partnership with Age UK London, Carers Trust and Citizens Advice.
