NHS leaders call to close mental illness 'mortality gap'

NHS leaders are calling on those who are commissioning services to help close the "shocking mortality gap" that sees people with mental illness have life expectancies about 10 years shorter than the population as a whole.

Martin McShane, director for patients with long-term conditions for NHS England said: "The 'mortality gap' we see today is shocking. It is not acceptable people with mental health conditions die younger. For too long, physical and mental health problems have been treated separately and people do not get the services they need every time. We must act to ensure mental health is on a par with physical health."

thinkarts! Creative Writing Project

We are working towards producing something for the Redbridge Book and Media festival in the spring of 2014. Our first session went really well but we are looking for members to take part.

Each week there will be different creative writing activities including individual and group tasks.

NELFT psychiatric ward staff named team of the year runner up in Royal College of Psychiatrists award

A psychiatric intensive care team at Sunflowers Court mental health facility in Goodmayes is celebrating after being announced as the runners up in the Royal College of Psychiatrist's national team of the year award at a ceremony on Thursday 14 November.

The Royal College of Psychiatrists awards recognise mental health professionals who are making a real difference to the lives of service users and carers.

The team, which works together on Titian ward, which is part of North East London NHS Foundation Trust (NELFT) provides inpatient psychiatric intensive care to adults with a variety of complex and challenging mental health problems.

NE London Recovery College we have some spaces still available

Term two at the North East London Recovery College will run from January 2014 until the end of March 2014.

There are still some spaces on the following courses: Understanding Recovery; Spirituality and Wellbeing; Employment and study; and The person behind the label.

Help available through the Redbridge Emergency Support Scheme

The scheme will provide financial help in two ways, but ONLY where there is no alternative help available:

Firstly, where urgent short term help is needed in exceptional circumstances, for example after an emergency or disaster, or to prevent serious risk to a person's or their immediate family's health or safety.

Secondly, where a person needs help to establish themselves in Redbridge after being in institutional care, as part of a planned resettlement programme, for example after leaving prison or residential care.

Please note: No cash payments will be made unless exceptional circumstances apply.
