Two-thirds of GPs say long waits ‘biggest barrier’ to treatments for mental illness

Two-thirds of GPs say long waiting times for psychological therapy are preventing patients getting treatment for common mental health problems, a survey has revealed. The findings suggest GPs are struggling to offer the most appropriate therapy because of lack of access to services.  The survey of 1,000 GPs in England showed that 66% see waiting times for psychological therapy as the ‘biggest barrier to treatment’.

Jon Abrams, Redbridge Concern for Mental Health said:

"It needs to be acknowledged that there has been improved funding for talking therapies in Redbridge. Nonetheless, m
ental illnesses are the largest source of disability in England and funding hasn't matched the increasing demand for services. The fact is the large majority of people in Redbridge do not receive treatment for mental health problems."

Older People's Week

UK Older People's Day is on 1 October every year to coincide with the UN International Day of Older persons. The main aim of the day is to recognise and celebrate the achievements of older people and the contributions they make to our society and the economy. We also want to spread the message that age is no barrier to staying active and being involved in community life.

This year Redbridge will once again be celebrating Older People's Day with a programme of events and activities from Monday 28 September to Friday 2 October. Events include socialising, staying healthy and active, learning opportunities and much more.

Our celebrations aim to:

  • Spread the message that age is no barrier to staying active and being involved in community life.
  • Raise awareness of opportunities and entitlements for older people
  • Recognise older people's achievements and the contribution they make to society
  • Create a positive view of later life and tackle outdated stereotypes

All activities are free and open to everyone and you can find out more on Redbridge i

Let Us Help You Get More Active

This year’s Annual Public Health Report has been published and focuses on influencing residents of all ages to be physically active as part of their everyday lives.

Designed to be accessed online, the report has been launched with some short films of local people sharing their stories and showing the benefits of regular exercise or movement.  Our aim is to inspire people of all ages to get more active and the films showcase the range of opportunities that are available locally.

Physical activity has many health benefits including reducing the risk of preventable diseases, improving mental wellbeing and increasing the chance of staying independent in later life.
