Redbridge patients invited to have their say on local mental health services

More than 800 patients who have received mental health services in Redbridge over the last year are to be asked about their care.

Surveys are being posted to patients who were treated between July and September 2012 by community mental health teams in Redbridge, which are provided by North East London NHS Foundation Trust.

Jacqui Van Rossum, executive director integrated care (London), North East London NHS Foundation Trust, urged everyone sent the survey to complete and return it. "Obtaining feedback from patients and taking account of their views and priorities is vital for bringing about improvements in the quality of care," she said. "Our community mental health services scored well overall in last year's National Community Patient Experience Survey, which was published in September 2012."

Mortality rate three times as high among mental health service users than in general population

New data released today by the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) shows that the mortality rate among people who are in contact with specialist mental health services is over three times that of the general population. The data refers to mental health service users aged 19 and over in England.

Paul Farmer, Chief Executive at Mind, said: 'Mind wants to see mental health being taken as seriously as physical health as the two often go hand in hand. These new figures suggest we still have a long way to go before we begin to achieve 'parity of esteem' between physical and mental health within our healthcare system. Only by ensuring people are given timely information, support and access to quality appropriate services, can we begin to address the above-average prevalence of disease and death among people with mental health problems.'
