The Schizophrenia Commission heard evidence from people with schizophrenia and psychosis, families, professionals, leaders of NHS and social services, academics, policy makers and journalists. Recommendations arising from their inquiry call for a radical overhaul of the current system of care.

Volunteers needed for Friends of Goodmayes

The Friends of Goodmayes is a small group of volunteers who help to provide a shop and tea bar at the Sunflowers Court mental health inpatient unit on the Goodmayes Hospital site. The group also raises money to provide additional items for the Sunflowers Court mental health inpatient unit and its surroundings to further improve the service user experience, which do no come from health service funding.

Olive Joyce, who volunteers with the group, said: "The Friends of Goodmayes is a lovely group of volunteers who dedicate some of their time each week to helping to improve the overall experience of mental health service users."

Sometimes, this is through fundraising for extra equipment for ward areas and sometimes this can be just through having a chat with a service user or carer over a cup of tea!"

If you have a spare afternoon free each week to help maintain this valued service, please get in touch.Full training is given and you would always be working with an experienced volunteer.

NELFT Mental Health Direct can arrange for you to speak with a mental health professional and can also advise you about what service to contact to get the support you need.
